ORCA (Outdoor Recreation and Community Access) is the recreation program of SAIL. ORCA's purpose is to promote inclusive recreation and adaptive outdoor pursuits for Southeast Alaskan's who experience disabilities.
Our philosophy is that recreation influences all aspects of a person's life: their employment, social life, physical and spiritual well being and a sense of place in their community. Challenging recreation opportunities give an individual a chance to recognize their ability to succeed.
|
|
ORCA maintains three offices; one in Juneau, one in Ketchikan, and one in Sitka. ORCA services include community access and inclusion opportunities, adaptive ski and Snowboard School, Youth and Transition Recreation Services, Adaptive outdoor pursuits and trips. ORCA has many wonderful volunteer opportunities. The calendar of events is published quarterly in the SAIL newsletter. Scheduled activities are subject to change due to low attendance or our unpredictable SE Alaska weather. Activities often have limited space available.
You must sign up for scheduled activities at least 24 hours in advance. Reservations are on a first-come-first-served basis. We do provide door-to-door transportation to and from scheduled activities. Let us know at the time you sign up for an activity if you will need transportation. All activities are offered at an affordable price to the participant and need-based scholarships are available. If there is a recreation opportunity that you do not see on our calendar and would like to explore, please let us know.
We are committed to meeting the needs of our consumers and promoting active healthy lifestyles. We also strongly encourage you to get out on your own and enjoy what your community has to offer.

Southeast Alaskans of all ages that experience
a disability can participate. Some of the disabilities include:
visual impairments, hearing impairments, head injuries, spinal
cord injuries, developmental disabilities, mental illness
and others. We encourage friends, care providers, and families
to join in on the fun. Adaptive equipment is available so
all abilities can participate.

It is ORCA's philosophy that individuals do their
best work in environments where they are included and valued as
equal participating members of their communities. The recreation
and inclusion staff are knowledgeable about community events and
plan inclusive activities to ensure a wide range of opportunities
and access for everyone.
We do everything from attending native/cultural
events and attending plays and concerts to working individually
with people to get them involved in generic community recreation
as independently as possible.
ORCA also works directly with community recreation providers to
promote inclusive recreation by providing disability awareness,
etiquette, and ADA training's.

Our program teaches people of all ages and abilities how to ski and
snowboard. We are skilled at teaching persons with many different types of disabilities including
developmental disabilities, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries,
mental illness, and more. We provide lessons every Saturday and
Sunday beginning in January.
The adaptive skiers and snowboarders are charged $34 for their lesson
and lift ticket. Those needing to rent gear can do so at the Eaglecrest
rental shop for an additional fee. Call the Eaglecrest rental shop for
rates. There is a $10 fee for use of the ORCA Bi-ski and mono-ski.
ORCA's wheelchair accessible van heads up to Eaglecrest on weekend
mornings, providing door-to-door service to and from skiers' homes for
an additional charge of $5.
RESERVATIONS ARE NECESSARY.
Please call the office
by Wednesday prior to the weekend that you'd like to ski or need
a ride. Students and volunteer instructors are matched up based
on compatibility. It is a great way for everyone to learn, have
fun, make new friends, and stay in shape!

There are great volunteer opportunities with this program. If you're
someone who can get down the mountain without thinking about it
too much, like to have fun, meet new people and ski/snowboard
for free, being a Volunteer Adaptive Instructor might be for you.
The volunteers' schedules are flexible to meet your needs, however
we do expect that instructors will teach a minimum of 2 days per
month. Lessons are 10am-3pm. For each lesson taught, ORCA and
Eaglecrest awards you with a complimentary voucher for a free
ski pass that is good for any day of the season.

year. Adventure Club calendars are published monthly. Please contact
us and we would be happy to put one in the mail.
Healthy Choices is a bi-monthly program for transitioning age
adults that focuses on physical fitness, healthy lifestyles, and
independent living skills. A few of the most popular Healthy Choices
units have been: Fun at the gym, tai chi, yoga, cooking classes,
first-aid and CPR.

During the summer months we focus on being outside
and enjoying the natural wonders of SE Alaska. On our summer schedule
you will find kayaking, biking, hiking, rafting, canoeing and
multi-day adventure trips. Adaptive equipment is available so
people of all abilities can participate.

|
A typical year consists of one 5-7 day kayak wilderness
trip, an extended backpacking trip, a road trip, and as many as
ten overnight trips to neighboring towns and wilderness cabins.
The prices of these trips are kept to a minimum and scholarships
are available.

Make a difference in your life by reaching out to people with disabilities in your community.
ORCA provides volunteers with a variety of
interesting and challenging options. Volunteers will gain experience
and training in the field of outdoor recreation and have many
chances to "get out" with fun and diverse groups of
people from your community. This program is partially supported
by grants from the City and Borough of Juneau.
